The Bageshwari Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the mother goddess Bagheswari, meaning Parvati, Lord Shiva's wife. It is one of the oldest ancient temples of the 51 Shakti Pitha. The Bagheswari Hills is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva. Inside the temple a stone cave flanked on either side by side two temples. The two temples are Bagheswari Devi and also the temple of Baba Taraknath.

The Temple is situated in the southern part of Bongaigaon city in Assam, India. It is a very important pilgrimage place for active participation of Maa Bageshwari for the general Hindu devotees. Near Birjhora Hill, Bongaigaon Town. It is surrounded by Birjhora Tea Estate. The hills and Tea Estate with its lush greenery and serenity adds to its fantastic thing about the temple and creates the feeling of spirituality in the mind of devotees.

History

The temple is known famously due to the nearby Bagheswari Pahar (hill/mountain) where Tigers (Bagh) were found in good numbers. Devotees flock to the temple in large numbers during the festival of Durga Puja, especially at the time of 'Durga Mahaashtami' when the buffaloes were sacrificed.


Legend believed that Goddess Parvati was separated into many parts after Dakshya Yagya and scattered across the earth by Lord Vishnu. Among all the holy body parts scattered across the country, a part of her Trishul (weapon) was fallen on the spot where the shrine lies within the temple. Thus, Bagheswari is dedicated in the name of Goddess Parvati. Near Birjhora Hill, Bongaigaon Town. It is surrounded by Birjhora Tea Estate. The hills and Tea Estate with its lush greenery and serenity adds to its fantastic thing about the temple and creates the feeling of spirituality in the mind of devotees.


Here, in this temple a rock-cut Ganesha of medieval period exists along with architectural components of a stone temple dating to 10th -11th CE and it was architectured by various creators.

  • Daily Puja

Every day, numerous devotees come to Maa Bageshwari to pray for their respective wishes.

  • Marriage

There is a separate Bhawan named as Tridip Bhawan to perform or celebrate rituals like Marriage and Anna Prasan. This Bhawan brings to the public with a token of Rs. 2,000/- from 6 am to 6 pm. 

  • Durga Puja

During the Durga Puja, Buffalos and Goats are sacrificed, Doves are released in air. Devotees come from several parts of Assam and India visit this temple to witness its power of spiritual rituals.

This is one among the most visited and oldest pilgrimage tourist spots in Assam as well in India owing to its power to connect humans with spiritual beliefs. It's an excellent importance during Durga Mahaastami which is observed during Durga Puja which is one among the most important festivals of Assam after Bihu (Baisagu) which comes during the October season.
 

Water

To maintain sanctity and cleanliness, there are two water sources for drinking, washing hands and foots. You will get this source after crossing the main gate of the temple. Ensure yourself purify.

Dashakarma Bhandar

Inside the temple there is Dashakarma Bhandar where you can buy prasad, laddu, coconut, banana, flower and other items are available and front of the main gate of the temple, there are 4-5 Dashakarma Bhandar also available. If you bring fruits and flowers, it is very good.

Photography

No restriction in photography and videography in the temple premises. Visitors are used to take photographs for their memories. A professional photographer is also there.

Sitting space

You can place your shoes and sandals in the shoe rack shed which is provided by the temple authority.

How to reach

By Rail/Bus:

Bongaigaon has two railway stations.

1. Bongaigaon (old) train station. This is the 1st train station in Bongaigaon. The place is well-connected by Rail. It's around 01 km from the Bongaigaon railway station and 174 km faraway from Guwahati train station.


2. New Bongaigaon (New). It's the 2nd largest railway junction in Assam and almost every train stop there. It is approximately 3.5 km from here. This station connects the entire North-East-India.


By Air:

1. Guwahati Airport in Assam. Then you've got to take bus or trains to Bongaigaon or New Bongaigaon, approximately it takes 3-4 hours.


2. The nearest Airport is Bagdogra, West Bengal. It takes approximately 4-5 hours from Buses and Trains till New Bongaigaon Station.
